Our Causes

Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation

The mission of Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation is to assist severely wounded, post-9/11 Veterans in their efforts to become productive and self-sufficient members of their communities as they transition back into civilian life. Our goal is to raise awareness of the sacrifice that these Veterans have made, and to motivate local communities to rally behind these young heroes as they strive to reach their potential.

Ryan Sykes joined the DVSR Rotary Club when he was a Sentinel. Ryan served in the US Navy, and was severely injured in Afghanistan.  In spite of the many challenges he faces each and every day, Ryan is a leader in our club, and provides much of the inspiration behind our commitment to the Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation.

Ryan was honored at the the Danville Veterans Memorial Hall as California Assembly District 16’s Veteran of the Year.  He was awarded this honor by California State Assemblywoman, Catharine Baker.

SRVUSD Dictionary Project

The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.
